About the Mack MP8 Diesel Engine

The Mack MP8 is a turbocharged, inline six-cylinder diesel with 12.8 liters of displacement, which Mack markets as a 13-liter engine. It's fully electronic, built to pull heavy loads without giving up everyday drivability or fuel economy. Most North American MP8s run between 415 and 505 horsepower and 1,460 to 1,860 lb-ft of torque. The exact output depends on the model year, the rating, and how the truck was spec'd.

That change split the MP8 into two camps for buyers. An EPA07 engine and an EPA10 engine differ in emissions hardware, electronics, and how they install, so you can't treat them as the same part.

The 2017 Engine Updates

The 2017 generation brought real mechanical changes. Mack fitted a redesigned wave piston and a two-speed coolant pump, and offered turbo compounding for long-haul trucks. Those updates raised MP8 fuel efficiency by up to 5 percent, and more on turbo-compounded engines. Mack also reworked parts of the top end to make routine service easier.

MP8HE Development

Mack later took efficiency further with the MP8HE. This high-efficiency version uses energy recovery through turbo compounding, pulling extra energy out of the exhaust and turning it into usable power. It pays off most on steady highway miles. The standard MP8 and the MP8HE are built differently, so confirm which version you have before you order a replacement.
