Cummins ISM Engines

The Cummins ISM engine is one of the most trusted mid-range heavy-duty diesel engines produced by Cummins, recognized for its reliability, strong torque curve, and excellent fuel economy. Introduced in the late 1990s as the successor to the Cummins M11, the ISM retained the proven mechanical foundation of its predecessor while adding electronic engine controls, improved combustion technology, and enhanced emissions performance.

Throughout the 2000s, the ISM became a widely used powerplant in Class 8 trucks, vocational applications such as dump trucks, mixers, and refuse trucks, as well as buses. With power ratings ranging from 280 to 450 horsepower, the ISM provided fleets and owner-operators with a relatively lightweight yet capable engine, delivering strong pulling power without sacrificing fuel efficiency.

Production of the ISM eventually ended as emissions regulations advanced, and it was replaced by the Cummins ISX11.9 / ISL9 platform. Despite this, the ISM engine remains in widespread use today and is highly regarded for its durability, ease of service, and strong aftermarket parts support, making it a preferred option for rebuilders, truck operators, and equipment owners.
