The 14.0-liter version arrived for the 2001 model year with a larger bore and stroke than the earlier 11.1L and 12.7L variants, boosting horsepower and torque. By 2004 it was the dominant engine in Freightliner's over-the-road sleepers, and when the 12.7L was discontinued in 2007, the 14.0L became the flagship of the Series 60 line. Later models moved to a dual-ECM DDEC VI setup with a diesel particulate filter to meet EPA07 rules. Production continued through 2011, when the Series 60 was succeeded by the DD15.
