Detroit Series 60 14.0 Engine For Sale
The Detroit Diesel Series 60 debuted in 1987 as one of the first heavy-duty diesels to run fully electronic, drive-by-wire controls. The 14.0-liter version arrived for the 2001 model year with a larger bore and stroke than the earlier 11.1L and 12.7L variants, boosting horsepower and torque. By 2004 it was the dominant engine in Freightliner's over-the-road sleepers, and when the 12.7L was discontinued in 2007, the 14.0L became the flagship of the Series 60 line. Later models moved to a dual-ECM DDEC VI setup with a diesel particulate filter to meet EPA07 rules. Production continued through 2011, when the Series 60 was succeeded by the DD15.
Today, the Series 60 14.0 remains popular for rebuilds and replacements in Freightliner trucks, marine propulsion, industrial power generation, oilfield equipment, fire apparatus, and mining machinery.

-
Cast iron block with replaceable wet liners
-

Reliability
Properly maintained Series 60 14.0 engines regularly run past 750,000 miles, with many reaching well over a million. Staying on top of oil changes, fuel filters, valve adjustments, and cooling system service is key to reaching that mileage. The turbocharger, injectors, and DPF (on later models) need periodic attention, but the durable cast iron block and available parts keep long-term costs manageable.
Why Buy a Detroit Series 60 14.0?
-
Proven long-term reliability
-
Strong, consistent power
-
Wide parts and service availability
-
Lower operating costs than newer emissions-heavy engines
